By Sean McGrathI’d like to talk to you about the most important lesson you can learn when it comes to fundraising … something you already know, but may not be verbalizing.A political friend of mine currently enjoys the highest name recognition in our state (as verified by three separate polls), |
| indicating that if the election were today, he would be the hands on favorite to win a high ranking state-wide office (besides the one he currently holds). | |
| His name recognition and previous years’ vote getting are off the chart. In most districts across the state he gets over 58% of the turnout vote, and as high as 72.9% in some counties. But, in spite of this excellent name recognition and voter turnout, his fundraising totals are enormously low. (To his credit, they haven’t had to be high in order to win in previous election cycles, so he has not had to raise a lot of money in the past). But now it’s different.His name recognition and previous years’ vote getting are off the chart. But now it’s different.He’s aiming for a higher office.Aiming for one of the highest offices in the land and competing against an equally viable opponent changes the game. Now the need for money is essential. And the time to raise it running out (He has only about 18 months to raise that amount of money before the next big election).Fortunately for him, he has a statewide grassroots voter turnout organization in place that he should be able to transform itself into a fundraising machine.But it’s not a given.In fact, he might even have a more difficult time raising money because in the past he’s been able to get elected to high office without the need for major donors throughout the state giving at the highest levels. | |
| Which raises a real and difficult dilemma for numerous elected officials and candidates across the nation. | |
If you build your campaign without a definitive and determined plan for getting investors “buy-in” EARLY and OFTEN along the way, you may end up being presented with a new opportunity (higher office) and find that you do not have enough necessary finances on hand to;
And what’s worse, you might end up with many donors thinking that you don’t really need their help because they figure you’ve already got great name recognition and you didn’t their contributions need it in the past. Don’t let this happen to you. For this particular situation I can assure you there is a solution, and it lies in understanding a secret that most fundraisers know but most CANDIDATES DON’T… The secret is that in order to finish strong, you have to BEGIN STRONG. In other words, failing to begin strong could actually HURT YOU in the long run by opening up possibilities for other would-be competitors within your same party who could force you into an ugly and EXPENSIVE PRIMARY campaign. Don’t create problems for yourself because you don’t like to ask for money. And don’t think that asking for money has to be a daunting, sweat-inducing, painful activity. It can actually be one of the most fulfilling aspects of campaigning when you position yourself right. And the best part is – you can actually learn the best possible way to do it! Take time to invest in yourself and learn some basic ideas about how to develop a powerful ask campaign and you’ll see results right away. In my eBook, How To Win, I teach several techniques that you can use to make sure you create the right first-impression with those important major donors in your state. And I’m not just talking about setting up events and making sure they’re on your email distribution list … but learning a different way of approaching them that will make them see you as the “only logical choice” for that next position of leadership in your particular district … and NOT just another politician with his hand out. If you want to know EXACTLY how to develop a campaign fundraising base that will POSITION YOURSELF as the ONLY VIABLE OPTION for the next major leadership position in your district/state, go check out my eBook right now. It took me a long time to figure this one out, and it turns out that most candidates/elected officials need to do the exact OPPOSITE of what they THINK they should do.
