The Power of Social Networking Sites

The Power of Social Networking Sites
By Sean McGrath

Social Networking
Social networking is not an optional marketing tool in your campaign; it is an absolutely essential part of your overall communication strategy.

Yes, it’s an affordable and accessible way to get the word out, and yes, it can cut down on certain campaign costs, but being active in social media is not just an option for underfunded campaigns anymore. It’s an essential part of every winning campaign strategy today.
Think back to the presidential campaign of 2008. Then Senator Barack Obama and Texas Congressman Ron Paul, early adaptors of online these social networking strategies, both developed huge national databases. One went on to become President, the other to develop a national movement known as the Tea Party and its partner organization, the
Campaign For Liberty. Both candidates demonstrated the power that this medium holds in terms of fundraising and in the ability to organize and rally large audiences across the entire country.

Here’s some factual statistics that back this up: as of the first quarter of 2009, time spent on social network and blogging sites was growing at over 3 times the rate of overall Internet growth! Check out these statistics I read about from Nielson Data:

  • Social network and blogging sites are now the fourth most popular activity on the Internet. (Nielson, Global faces & Networked places, 2009.).
  • The average time spent on social network and blogging sites is growing at over 3 times the rate of overall Internet growth (Nielson, Global faces & Networked places, 2009.).
  • 90% of consumers trust recommendations from people they know; and 70% trust consumer opinions posted online. (July 2009 Nielsen Global Online Consumer Survey).
Let me put it in another way for you: 90% of the voters in your district trust the recommendations (referrals) they get from people they know … and 70% of those voters will trust the opinions of others posted online.

Listen, if you’re not working effectively in these social media sites to capitalize on referrals and positive buzz, then you’re doomed!

Here’s why: I can now go online and precisely identify the exact voters you want to reach, communicate with them directly and consistently (at a ridiculously low price), and I can get your affiliated coalition partners to recommend you to their databases, exposing you to more people, for less money, with your specific message in record breaking time.

It’s no wonder these national campaigns are able to grow and rain in such huge amounts of contributions so rapidly.

And so can you.

I am literally writing an entire new book on this subject, but for now, here are the absolute basics that you better have working for your campaign:

In order to be seen and talked about your social media strategy must cover the three R’s … it must be

  • Be Real
  • Be Recent
  • Be Relevant
What that means is that your communication outreach has to be personal, current and obviously relevant to the voters in your district. Simple slogans that work off-line can be a foundation of your online message, but you have to go deeper and translate your message to the voters in a way that is relevant and timely in their lives.

And by far the most powerful way to do that is with an integrated video sequence strategy

Video is now a mainstay of the blogospheres because it allows us to convey more information in a timely manner, and it allows the viewer to make an immediate emotional connection with the speaker.

So here’s a quick application guide:

Take a 60-90 second informational piece (let’s say a campaign launch), wrap some powerful music around it, and do a little bit of editing, and you have what I call a “mini-movie” … a compelling video that has mass voter appeal and can be referred to others in numerous ways. If your information has a great hook that is relevant, a personal appeal, and an offer to get more free information, then you have a winner.

Now, we haven’t even touched on the power of Twitter or the other direct communication platforms that are immediately available to you in today’s social milieu. But I do cover those in my eBook, How To Win.
