By Sean McGrathI’d like to talk about a concept that alarmingly simple to get, and very easy to implement.In fact, it’s a concept that is so easy to get, that it’s easy to overlook and miss entirely.
It’s about attracting major donors to give to you based on developing what I call your Donor Dream 250 (DD250) list.And what I’m about to share with you took me literally YEARS to figure out…even though it was right in front of my face the whole time.When I first decided to become an expert in “Winning Elections” I discovered that I’d have to get firm grip on the area known as Advanced Fundraising if I wanted to have a real impact. So I did what most candidates do … I THOUGHT a lot about it, I READ a lot about it, and I ASKED a lot of questions about it.

I’ve spent a lot of time studying psychology and human behavior, because it fascinates me (I earned my undergraduate degree in Sociology and my masters degree in Diplomacy – both fields of study deeply rooted in the psychology of human behavior), and I figured that my understanding about how people worked would really give me a competitive edge when it comes to winning elections and raising big dollar contributions.

And since I’m pretty smart, I figured that this would be something that I’d get figured out rather quickly.

What a humbling experience I was in for.

Because soon I learned that while there’s a lot of money out there, it’s not that easy to get for most candidates!

In fact, now that I know better, I think that attracting big money into your campaign IS a fairly simple process … if you understand the psychology of most of your major donors. 

As I went deeper into the real world of power trying to figure all this stuff out for myself (and keep in mind that I had no idea that I would go on to write and publish a book to help others) I kept running into challenges.

It seemed that every logical thing I did – or was told to do – just didn’t work in a way that made sense. I was never able to attract the big money donors to my cause. Then I realized…

One of the biggest mistakes I made was ASSUMING THAT RAISING BIG MONEY FOR YOUR CAMPAIGN WORKED THE SAME WAY FOR CHALLENGERS AS IT DOES FOR
INCUMBENTS.

It made sense to me that if I put my name out there as an ‘established’ candidate of a given party, that those who are donors to that political party would naturally want to donate to me … right?

So, of course, I tried to work this angle by being seen at all the right events, working hard within the party to develop a name for myself, and generally becoming the NICEST and HARDEST WORKING guy you could ever meet. I even became a LEADER within the party, serving as a STATE COMMITTEEMAN, the VICE-CHAIR of a congressional District and even the CHAIRMAN of my COUNTY party. I would do whatever the party wanted, and basically accepted whatever job the party had available.

But since none of that stuff seemed to really help at all, I just coming back to the same conclusion:

I MUST NOT BE SMART ENOUGH … WELL-CONNECTED ENOUGH … ESTABLISHED ENOUGH … OR “SOMETHING” ENOUGH.

Because I was doing everything I could imagine to be the “right” guy … but major donors just didn’t seem to respond to me in a big money way…

“It must just be me that’s the problem,” I thought.

Well, fortunately for me, I’m not one to quit easily.

I stuck with it, and finally did something that had a PROFOUND impact on my personal success…

I MADE FRIENDS WITH SOME ELECTED OFFICIALS AND FUNDRAISING EXPERTS WHO WERE “NATURALLY SUCCESSFUL” IN RAISING BIG DOLLAR AMOUNTS AND I WATCHED WHAT THEY DID.

When I think back now, I think to myself, “DUH!”

But it REALLY has made a huge difference.

Here’s a big revelation I learned from them:

Major Donors give big amounts to those people they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST,and they will influence their big donor friends to do the same – when they BELIEVE in you.

Oftentimes candidates mistakenly believe that trust comes automatically when they put their name on a ballot sheet, or when they are seen as an operative within the party organization, and that donors will give to them automatically because they have filed as a candidate of a given party.

Well, big money DONORS are inclined to give based on RELATIONSHIPS and YOUR PERCEIVED LEVEL OF INFLUENCE on impact areas that are important to them.

Think about that for a moment.

Candidates believe major donors will be attracted to give because they are ‘well known’ or ‘part of the same party’ or interest group. Major donors are attracted to give those whom they feel they Know, Trust and Believe can make an impact on the process.

Does party affiliation, media attention and name recognition play into this at all?

Of course they do.

But they are not nearly as important as most candidates think they are.

To sum up …

  • Attracting big money from major donors is a lot harder than just having name recognition or being well-known as a party operative
  • While candidates work hard to get name recognition, major donors are looking for certain personality traits that demonstrate TRUST, BELIEF and imply a certain level of INFLUENCE on the overall process

Major donors don’t decide who they are going to give just based on party affiliation or name recognition. They “decide” to give based on deeper levels of relationship and their desire to influence the process in a meaningful way.
